Well, that wasn't supposed to happen...

So, there I was, my training was going well, I was tracking nicely to reach my goal of 500 hours of training over the course of the year, and then I decided to organise a sparring session on a Sunday evening just for fun with some guys I train with.

Everything was going well, I was 20 minutes into the session, we were working with some intensity without trying to kill each other, I wasn't getting hit too much (except that round kick to the face - thanks Ants), and then it happened.  I stepped backwards to avoid a hook and bang (and I do mean BANG) I ruptured my Achilles tendon.

It happened just like everyone I had talked to previously described it - it felt like I got kicked in the leg, I heard a huge pop (not an exaggeration - one of the guys I was training with heard it clearly from across the room), and I felt like my foot and leg were no longer connected to each other.  I went down like a sack of potatoes.  My first thought was "not again!", I had had a good spell of a couple of years injury free - well serious injury free anyway, there were still a few niggles hanging around that come from a lifetime of involvement in sport and exercise but nothing that was holding me back too much.

After that the pain hit me, it was pretty bad but I managed to stay calm and get my training buddies to call the ambulance and explain the problem.  After waiting for half an hour we decided to just drive to the hospital ourselves (well I thought I would let Ants drive - you know, I was really just being lazy).

I was seen pretty quickly by a doctor who told me what I already knew, that I had ruptured my Achilles and could look forward to 12 weeks in a cast.  Awesome news, especially with the progress I had been making in my training.  Oh well, the aim for the next little while is to stay positive, rest up and see the specialist on the 13th and hopefully be put into a moon boot so that I am a little more mobile.

Fingers crossed I can get back to work full time soon, although it has been great to catch up on my TV time - yesterday I managed to watch all four Die Hard movies on my laptop back to back - the life of an invalid!
